Así empezó en la tarde de ayer el primer contacto ARISS con la Estación Espacial Internacional desde Canarias. Veinte estudiantes de entre 11 y 25 años procedentes de todas las islas han tenido la ocasión de hablar a través de la radio con el astronauta italiano Paolo Nespoli, que ha contestado a las preguntas de los jóvenes.

El contacto tuvo lugar en las instalaciones del Instituto para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación en Comunicaciones (IDeTIC) de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a las 14:17 UTC y se retransmitió por internet a través de la web del evento en la que la semana que viene subirán el vídeo.

Este tipo de contactos, que únicamente está autorizado a centros educativos, tiene como objetivo acercar la ciencia y la tecnología a toda la sociedad. En España se han realizado anteriormente tres contactos de estas características, dos en 2003 y uno en 2007, pero nunca desde una Universidad española.

Las preguntas que realizaron los estudiantes fueron:
1. Laura: Can you tell me the different procedures that you must follow if you have an important technical problem?
2. Rodrigo: Are the effects of climate change on Earth visible from space?
3. Jorge: Has the station any way to simulate day and night so you know when to sleep?
4. Bethany: Can you see pollution on Earth from space?
5. Andrea: How old were you when you first thought of being an astronaut?
6. Adrián: How do solar storms affect the space station?
7. Abraham: Would a game console like the Wii work on the ISS?
8. Luis: Do you see sparks when you close your eyes as the astronauts in the Apollo program used to?
9. Daniel: What do you do in your free time?
10. Héctor: What is the temperature in degrees Celsius inside and outside the station?
11. María: Have you seen the Canary Islands from space?
12. Juan: How are circadian rhythms affected by living in orbit?
13. Mario: Does food taste the same as here?
14. Laura: What will you miss most from space when you’ll be back on Earth?
15. Paula: How long do you think it will take to inhabit other planets?
16. Néstor: If you established communications with a U.F.O. and you only had three words to describe humanity, which ones would you choose?
17. Varkha: What would happen if you found space debris on your way?
18. Victoria: What would you do if any member of the crew in the spaceship got seriously sick?
19. Christian: What is more important for the space trip: physical training or psychological preparation?
20. Esther: I would like to work for a space agency, what do you advise me to do?

La experiencia de ayer ha sido una fiesta que ha servido como punto de encuentro entre Canarias y el espacio, entre la ciencia y la sociedad, entre la juventud y la ilusión. Ojalá este tipo de eventos sirvan para promover el interés por la ciencia y la tecnología en la sociedad española.
